The Lost City of Atlantis

The Lost City of Atlantis

A massive city of the Ancients, Atlantis is home to a vast array of technological wonders. Once believed to be the center of Ancient operations, the city now serves as the command base for the human expedition from Earth.

Atlantis is the pinnacle of Ancient engineering. The architecture comprises of six angular pylons connected to a central island, which includes the command tower. The entire base used to be powered by three Zero Point Modules (ZPM), which have since expired. Instead, three Naquadah generators, brought from Earth, now take their place. Although the Daedalus, Earth's second warship, carries a ZPM, it is only used on Atlantis to power the shield, cloak and weapons, when needed.

Zero-Point ModuleAlthough originally built as a city, Atlantis has an extraordinary space-flight capability. In fact, it was this capability that allowed the Ancients to leave Earth in search of a new home in the Pegasus galaxy, over ten million years ago.

Unfortunately, the Ancients were defeated by a new enemy known as the Wraith. During a long and costly war, the Wraith pushed back the Ancients, forcing them to make one last stand on Atlantis. Knowing they would eventually be defeated, the Ancients submerged the city and returned to Earth through the Stargate. It was not until the Earth expedition, led by Dr. Elizabeth Weir, managed to bring the city back online, that it finally saw daylight again.

The Atlantis Expedition

Since their arrival in the Pegasus galaxy, the Earth team have added several failsafe precautions, most notably the self-destruct. This device requires the key codes of two senior officer's, and, when set off, overloads the naquadah generators, effectively causing a 20 kiloton-equivalent explosion.

The main control center of the Atlantis is located at the top of a large tower that sits in the center of the city. This tower houses the control center, gate room, briefing room and puddle jumper bay.

The control center is the nerve center of the city, positioned opposite the gate room, with a clear view of the Stargate. There are various control stations, each with its own function, allowing the control staff to monitor every aspect of the city. In the forward section, the monitoring personnel can control the Stargate by use of the 'Dial Home Device' (DHD). This panel also allows operation of the Stargate forcefield, communications, and gate address database.

Situated opposite and below the control room, lies the gate room, containing the Stargate. The gate room is a large open space with plenThe DHDty of room to maneuver a puddle jumper or act as a defence point for military personnel and equipment. There is a large flight of stairs in the center of the room, which lead up to the control center.

Also located at the top of the control tower is the briefing room. Situated on the same level, and opposite the control room, the briefing room serves as a conference area for the discussion of mission-critical information. The room features a large semi-circular table with a display monitor towards the front of the room and the entire area can be closed off when required, by operation of the sliding doors surrounding the briefing room.

The puddle jumper bay is the last major room located at the top of the control tower, and is situated above the gate room for easy access by jumper. This large hangar bay is filled with puddle jumpers stacked on several levels. When operating a jumper, the pilot may exit through the floor, into the gate room, The Ancient chairor through the roof, and to the outside of the city.

Further down the tower lies the city's medical bay, the main facility for treating the sick and injured of Atlantis. There are multiple beds for patients as well as a medical lab area where research, such as the gene therapy, is conducted.

Like most Ancient outposts, Atlantis houses a chair room, a facility for controlling the city's defensive systems such as the arsenal of drone weapons, shields and the cloaking device. It is a circular room with a small platform in the center, on which is the chair. Only personnel with the Ancient gene can operate the chair.

Overlooking the pier, the mess hall is the social gathering area for the Atlantis team, and where all meals are prepared. The main room is open to the sea breeze with a magnificent view of the pier, however, this can be closed off on bad days.

Living Quarters

Contained within the city is the designated gym, or exercise area. This large room provides excellent space to train in hand-to-hand combat or other forms of cardiovascular activity. The room has an additional area for gym equipment.

Each Atlantis team member has his or her own living space within the city. The living quarters are spacious, with some offering sea views over the pier. Most have a sleeping area, a living area and a desk with a laptop computer.

The city of Atlantis still holds many secrets left to explore. Over the years, the human expedition from Earth has uncovered a plethora of alien technologies, some good, some bad, but there are undoubtedly many more left to find, as more and more of the city is uncovered.
