The Zero Point Module, or ZPM for short, is an Ancient power source capable of providing power to Ancient systems for extremely long periods of time. The device itself is cylindrical, with a crystal-like surface, and derives its power from contained subspace.
Ancient technology that requires vast amounts of energy is operated by ZPMs. Atlantis, at peak efficiency, is operated by three such ZPMs. When a ZPM is connected to the Stargate, an eighth chevron can be dialled, establishing a wormhole to another galaxy.
The Atlantis expedition currently has just one ZPM which is kept to power the shield and cloaking device of the city, should the Wraith attack.
