First commanded by Colonel Steven Caldwell, the USS Daedalus is Earth's second battlecruiser. Her mission is to provide aid and defence to the Atlantis expedition, a task not made easy by the ever present Wraith threat.
The Daedalus is armed with rail guns, Mark VIII tactical warheads and is home to a squadron of F-302 fighter craft. The ship has been enhanced with Asgard shields and transporter technology as well as Asgard beam weapons, like her sister ships, the Apollo and Odyssey.
The Daedalus is equipped with an Asgard hyperdrive engine, allowing her to travel from the Milky Way to the Pegasus galaxy in eighteen days. As a result, most of the work carried out by the crew is the ferrying of personnel and supplies between Earth and Atlantis.
The engine room houses the control panels for most of the ship's systems and is manned by a crew of highly expert engineers. A main diagnostic console is in the middle of the room, with a large console on the wall in front, providing an overview of ship's systems.
As the Daedalus is equipped for long-range travel, it is necessary to provide a mess hall in which the crew can dine. The mess hall serves hot food and drink to all Daedalus personnel.

The
command center of the Daedalus, the bridge, is similar in layout to
the USS Prometheus, Earth's first battlecruiser, although there are
several technological advances. In the center is the commanding
officer's chair and to the right of him, the weapons officer, the
left, the helmsman. The forward section of the bridge includes a
wide view port, which is particularly useful in battle situations.
The
Daedalus carries a small contingent of F-302 fighter craft for use
in battle situations. The F-302's are housed in the starboard flight
deck. While there are two hangar bays - starboard and port -, only
one is in use at any one time, to provide an emergency landing
platform during combat.
